Ranaway by Charli Otto (2024)
With a hint of jazz influence, Ranaway has the pan and marimba trade between melodies and accompaniment, providing each player with shining moments. Influenced by the movie series Sharknado, something Charli and I have bonded extensively on during our time together at the University of Iowa, the title of the piece suggests the thrilling action of running from a tornado filled with sharks. The first movement begins with a slow solo marimba introduction before the steel pan enters, repeating and building upon the melody introduced by the marimba. The movement gradually accelerates, gaining excitement and speed all the way up to unison ending between steel pan and marimba. The second movement begins at a quick tempo filled with moving melodic lines that pass around between the players and includes moments in the piece that hint back to the first movement. The second movement ends the same as the first, with a bold final statement, depicting the end of the chase between shark and human.
