Nature / Nurture by Brendan Sweeney (2024)
Nature / Nurture “explores how socialization and isolation effect development, how we grow together with others and how we grow when we are apart, and how dialogue and exchange of ideas can be transformative. Nature / Nurture is a sonic narrative in three continuous acts presenting the duality of what in life we are inherently endowed with, and what we have as a result of our environment and community.” This work is a conversation between three different types of drumming: rudimental, drum set, and contemporary. Act I represents one of our few universal experiences of the human world: birth, while depicting a shared upbringing of each player. Act II focuses on how circumstances shape who we are past our initial origins through soloistic moments between players. In Act III, the contrast and diversity of the three players' separate musical identities are thrown into sharp relief. The players are searching for commonality despite their differences, seeking a mutual understanding that is at times possible and at other times frustratingly futile. The Epilogue represents our last shared human experience: how we all ultimately confront death at the end of our lives.
