Fracture Zone by Julia Petrongolo (2023)
Fracture Zone is the name given to the large scars left in the bottom of the ocean that occur after the shifting of Earth’s tectonic plates. These scars usually signify past or current instability in the sea floor, making them common locations for earthquakes and underwater volcanoes. Written around imagery of the ocean in its multitude of forms, from tranquil to troubled to absolutely cataclysmic, this piece incites the locations of these scars in the sea floor as locations of all of these forms at once, dormant until they are cracked open as catalysts for disaster. The opening emulates the quiet peace of a shore in the evening, while later sections depict building waves, unsettled currents, and eruption.
