Friction by Brian Blume (2015)

Friction explores the musical friction between two performers with the use of close intervals, conflicting overlaying rhythms, contrasting phrasing, glissandi, and the physical friction of bowing the bars. “Friction is everywhere. We can’t live without it. It can be a useful tool, as in starting a fire with wood alone. However, friction can also become a problem: slowing motion of an object we wish to continue in motion; or heating something up beyond a safe temperature. And in the world of relationships, with ourselves and with others, friction is inevitable. This work explores the friction or conflict within oneself – I wish to this or do this; yet find myself doing that – as well as the friction we experience in the world around us.” -Brian Blume
